How to Address Colic Naturally
The early days of infancy are some of the sweetest times. Newborns are snuggly and sweet, and just about everything they do is adorable. You desperately want to enjoy these early days with your new bundle of joy, but when your baby is crying for hours on end each day, it can be extremely difficult to stay positive and enjoy your time together.
Colic is extremely common in babies, but that doesn’t make it easier to deal with. Colic is not really a disorder or diagnosis, but rather a state of being for a time. Babies are considered colicky when they cry for three or more hours a day, three or more days a week, for three or more weeks. Babies with colic may experience and exhibit a wide variety of symptoms:
- Crying that sounds like they are in pain
- Crying for no apparent reason—feeding, changing, burping, and holding them doesn’t help
- Consistent fussiness, even when not crying
- Bodily tension—clenched fists, stiff arms and legs, tight abdomen, and arched back
Most babies with colic are the fussiest around the same time each day, such as in the early evening hours, though general fussiness or intense crying can happen at any time. Generally speaking, colic peaks around 6 weeks of age, and then babies decline in fussiness until about 3 or 4 months of age, at which point colic typically dissipates.
If you’re positive your baby has colic, what can you do? A pediatrician may prescribe medication or offer gas drops or gripe water, but none of those things offer a lasting solution and they are certainly not natural and without possible side effects. While there is no single cause of colic, many different things may contribute to it, making it difficult to nail down the root cause and come up with a reliable solution. Thankfully, Dr. Shane Hoffman at Thrive Family Chiropractic has seen a great deal of success in relieving symptoms in colicky babies with chiropractic care.
Chiropractic Care for Colic
The birthing experience can be quite traumatic for a baby’s little body. No matter how the baby was delivered, chances are that his or her neck was twisted or pulled enough to cause a spinal misalignment. When a baby has a misalignment in their spine from birth, they tend to have more issues with regular bodily functions, such as eating, digesting, sleeping, and more. Because the spine houses the spinal cord, any misalignments of vertebrae can impact the communication between the brain and the rest of the body. Des Moines chiropractor Dr. Shane Hoffman can give your newborn a gentle and precise chiropractic adjustment that removes spinal misalignments and encourages proper communication throughout the entire body once again. This spinal alignment will improve your baby’s ability to eat, digest, breathe, move, sleep, and more. Chiropractic care has been shown to drastically reduce symptoms of colic, along with many other typical newborn challenges.
Chiropractic care is a natural, safe, and effective way of improving the life of your baby and your entire family. It can not only help alleviate common health concerns and illnesses, but it can also improve the overall function of your entire body, bringing you more health and wellness.
